Recently, the President of Zambia made a stunning announcement. President Hakainde Hichilema, on the eve of Africa day, announced his plans of abolishing the death penalty completely. It was a bold decision and received support from different parts of the country. One of the supports is Dr. Rajan Mahtani who is known for his business success and philanthropic contributions across the nation and Zambia. Dr. Rajan Mahtani, while supporting this decision from the Zambian President, stated that the punishment of death penalty does not solve the issues of crimes and criminal activities across the nation. There are hundreds of prisoners across Zambia under death penalty and for them, each day is like their last day as they are not aware of their final day. Furthermore, the condition of the prisoners across Zambia is extremely difficult and dangerous with prisoners being subjected to several challenges. These conditions make it difficult for prisoners to transform themselves or dedicate their lives to God. Several initiatives have been taken in the past wherein prisoners are released after good work, transformation and changed life. However, none of these initiatives are as powerful and meaningful as the present announcement made by President Hichilema.
Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani also stated that he will support the announcement made by the Zambian President and will ensure regulatory and legal compliances. Dr. Rajan Mahtani is the founder and current chairman of the Prison Fellowship Zambia, a noted Christian Outreach Program in Zambia. Prison Fellowship has similar goals including providing teachings of Jesus Christ, ensuring fundamental human rights and transparent criminal justice. Dr. Rajan Mahtani has stated that his company Prison Fellowship will support in transforming the announcement into a reality.
